AP Exam - May 11, 2012

Syllabus

Text:  America Past and Present by Divine, Breen, Jackson, Williams

The textbook will provide the major structure for the course.  It is important that all assigned readings be completed before the class as it provides a broad base from which lectures, written assignments, and units of study will be derived.  Additional readings will be assigned in class.

This course gives high school students the opportunity to study American History at a college level.  It is designed to prepare students for the rigorous exam given in the spring.  Those who do well will earn college credit.

Since this is a college level class, I will not and cannot "teach" the book.  YOU are responsible for all reading assignments and full comprehension of the reading.  You may need to read the chapters more than once to fully understand the concepts.  As in all college level classes, your grade will be based primarily on tests.  Other assignments will be required.

Graded Assignments:  Most of your grade will be based on chapter and unit tests.  All tests will be multiple choice and essay and they are cumulative.  Quizzes on identifications will be matching or fill in the blank.  Pop quizzes will be given regularly based on assigned reading and IDs.  You will also have frequent Clicker quizzes based on previous information, vocabulary, dates, and reading assignments.

Emphasis will be placed on writing effective essays to prepare for the free response portion of the exam.  Studying primary sources will be an integral part of each chapter.

Most of your assignments will be accessed and downloaded by you.  You do not have to print each primary source if you read it thoroughly online.  Your Study Guides and all written assignments must be downloaded, completed and turned in to me.  If printing is impossible for you, let me know the week prior to each assignment.  You can read the primary sources at our school media center or any public library.
